Outreach

Cool! Gummy worms.Penn State is well-known for its outreach, and our group continues this terrific tradition.

Erin has helped make nitrogen ice cream at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Chemistry Department sponsored "Chemistry as Art" booth at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, and in 2004, Kelly Stewart and Kanika Vats helped out.   Over 1000 kids stop by this booth every year.

Based on her ArtsFest experience and discussions with Andrew Greenberg, the former Outreach Coordinator for the Center for Nanoscale Science, Erin has partnered with Wanda Braymer, the county extension agent for 4-H where she grew up, to develop a science outreach booth for the Crawford County (PA) Fair in August. Kids of all ages have enjoyed making gummy worms. We've had our PSU/4-H booth at the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Fairs, and we plan on making this an annual event that we will do with the Heikal Group in PSU Bioengineering.

Minjoung Kyoung and Kanika Vats helped out at the Franklin Institute's Science Camp in August 2003. They enjoyed this experience and look forward to participating in future MRSEC-sponsored outreach programs.
