Principal Investigator
Scott Showalter (CV)
Ph.D., Washington University School of Medicine
106 Chemistry Building
814-865-2318
Send Scott an E-mail
Scott joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at Penn State in 2008. He has been fascinated with bio-molecular NMR since his days as an undergraduate and enjoys his new role as mentor to the lab. Scott is an avid hockey fan and would enjoy any funding you would like to give him.
Staff Assistant
Sabrina Glasgow
208 Chemistry Building
814-863-2619
Send Sabrina an E-mail
Sabrina enjoys formatting tenure dossiers, quilting, and keeping the lab running far more smoothly than it would without her.
Postdoctoral Fellows
Debashish Sahu (CV)
Ph.D., University of Texas Medical Branch
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Deb an E-mail
Deb studied nonspecific DNA binding by homeodomain proteins with Prof. Junji Iwahara prior to joining our laboratory in 2011. In our group Deb has taken a leading role in miRNA structure modelling and in making a shocking amount of dusty stuff we have purchased over the past few years and never actually used finally work.
Graduate Students
Chad Lawrence (CV)
B.S., Roanoke College
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Chad an E-mail
Chad has been a member of the group since April, 2009. In addition to his interest in disordered proteins, Chad enjoys the distinction of being our lab's only amateur magician.
Kaycee Quarles (CV)
B.S., Georgia Institute of Technology
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Kaycee an E-mail
Kaycee joined our group in 2009 and has been working on biophysical characterization of RNA. Kaycee was a Chemical Engineer as an undergraduate as well as a Georgia Tech football fan. We don't hold either against her.
Rico Acevedo (CV)
B.S., Shepherd College
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Rico an E-mail
Rico joined our group in 2010. Like Chris, he is quickly adapting to post-organic life and rapidly realizing there were far fewer peaks in NMR spectra before he switched to proteins. Rico will be working on the RNA binding project.
Monique Bastidas (CV)
B.S., California State
Sacramento
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Monique an E-mail
Monique joined our group in 2010 and is expanding our IDP project into diabetes related applications. Monique is an aficionado of all things avocado.
Brittney Nagle (CV)
B.S., Kings College
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Brittney an E-mail
Brittney joined our group in 2011 and is expanding our FCP1 project. Oddly enough, Brittney is the first graduate student in the lab who attended college in Pennsylvania.
Eric Gibbs (CV)
B.S., Temple University
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Send Eric an E-mail
Eric joined our group in the spring of 2012 and is working with Chad to develop additional model systems for the IDP project. Eric is our group's first proficient player of the berimbau.
Undergraduate Students
Alumni
Chris Wostenberg (CV)
Ph.D., Penn State 2012
B.S., Cal State Long Beach
Having decided not to find out if organic chemists really do live as long as everybody else, Chris joined our lab in 2008. Chris is interested in NMR spectroscopic and molecular dynamics studies of proteins and protein-RNA interactions. He enjoys teaching and spent time doing so prior to entering graduate school. Chris is currently a post-doctoral researcher in the lab of Prof. Rob Batey at the University of Colorado.
Alain Bonny (CV)
B.S. 2010
Alain was the first undergraduate to join our group. After beginning his training in the Biology major, Alain switched into the Chemistry program. After graduation, Alain participated in Teach for America. He is currently a graduate student at UCSF.
Ellen Forsyth (CV)
B.S. expected 2012
110 Chemistry Building
814-865-0688
Ellen was our second chemistry / biology double major and also a member of the Penn State Equestrian Team. Ellen worked with us on the miRNA project while at Penn State and is currently a graduate student at the American University.
